Darth Sidious was born as Sheev Palpatine on the planet Naboo. He belonged to a political family and lived a noble life with a hidden ambition to seek greater power than anyone else in the galaxy. His secret fascination led him to Darth Plagueis, a Sith Lord who recognized Palpatine’s potential. Plagueis trained Palpatine and taught him to channel anger, hatred, and fear to connect with the darkness. Eventually, Palpatine betrayed Plagueis, killing the master, following the Sith Rule of Two, and became Darth Sidious, the new Dark Lord of the Sith.
In the Galactic Politics
Palpatine kept his reality hidden and worked as a senator in galactic politics. He appeared humble but secretly worked to manipulate galactic events. He moved step by step towards greater chaos, causing instability in the Republic. Using the Sith philosophy, Sidious began to sow the seeds of conflict. The growing tension between the Republic and the Separatists was orchestrated by Sidious, who manipulated both sides. Sidious also recruited Count Dooku as Darth Tyranus, his apprentice who became the leader of the Separatist movement.
Rise to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine
Palpatine used deception to rise in politics. His diplomatic leadership skills led to galactic crises to further his agenda. In The Phantom Menace, the Trade Federation, acting on Sidious’ orders, blockaded Naboo. This chaos weakened the Republic, and Palpatine presented himself as a savior. After the conflict, Palpatine was elected Supreme Chancellor, giving Sidious control over the Republic’s political machinery.
The Clone Wars and Order 66
The conflict of Naboo was the beginning of the Clone Wars. After gaining a prominent position in politics, Palpatine could control both sides of the conflict. He led the Republic as Chancellor while directing the Separatists through his apprentice, Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus). Sidious used the Clone Wars to eliminate all Jedi and rule over the galaxy. He created the situation in which the Jedi were forced to act as generals in the Republic’s army, becoming symbols of war rather than peace. This loss of public trust furthered Sidious’s plans to destroy the Jedi.
Alongside other schemes, creating the Grand Army of the Republic was a key moment in Sidious’ strategy. Clones bred on Kamino were loyal to the Republic but secretly conditioned with inhibitor chips. These chips allowed Sidious to execute Order 66 at the right time.
The Rise of the Empire

When all the Jedi were in the Battlegrounds, Sidious revealed his Sith identity to Anakin Skywalker. He promised Anakin the power to save Padmé Amidala. Sidious lured Anakin to become Darth Vader, his new apprentice. With the help of Vader, Sidious became more powerful. He issued Order 66, in which it was declared that all Jedi were traitors, and then clone troopers turned against the Jedi masters to kill them.
Order 66 ended the Jedi Order, leaving only a few survivors who went into hiding. Sidious dissolved the Galactic Republic and declared himself Emperor of the newly formed Galactic Empire. Under his leadership, the once-democratic Senate lost its authority, and the galaxy fell into an era of oppression.
The Ultimate Weapon of Darth Sidious
To gain an unbeatable power, Sidious constructed the Death Star, an ultimate weapon to destroy the planets. The battle station symbolized the Empire’s absolute control. The construction of the Star began right after the fall of the Republic, with design contributions from Geonosians.
Sidious kept the plan of the Death Star's construction hidden because there were still Jedi alive in exile. He appointed his most trustworthy figures, like Grand Moff Tarkin, to supervise the battle station’s completion. In A New Hope, the Death Star became a central part of the Galactic Civil War. The power of the Death Star was revealed when the planet Alderaan was destroyed within seconds. When the Rebels saw its power, they became more determined to fight back.
In the battle of Yavin, Luke Skywalker and the Rebels succeeded in destroying the Death Star. This defeat was one of the first significant blows to Sidious’ reign, though the Emperor dismissed the Rebels as a temporary nuisance.
Role in the Galactic Civil War
Following the Death Star's destruction, Sidious decided to strengthen his control over the galaxy. The Empire initiated a harsh crackdown on networks that were suspected to be helping the Rebels. In addition, Sidious asked for the construction of the second Death Star, which was bigger, more powerful, and more advanced than the first one.
During the Galactic Civil War, Sidious had a key strategic position. The Sith Lord focused on using the Force to maintain his power and relied on Darth Vader to eliminate Rebel threats. Sidious perceived the emergence of Luke Skywalker and recognized him as a danger. The Emperor intended to corrupt Luke and replace Vader with a younger, more capable apprentice.
The Death of Darth Sidious
Sidious set a trap for the Rebel Alliance and mainly for Luke Skywalker. In Return of the Jedi, he lured the Rebels to the forest moon of Endor. Sidious allowed them to believe the second Death Star was vulnerable. The Emperor was sure his fleet would crush the Rebels' forces, so he prepared for their attack.
Sidious also planned a confrontation with Luke Skywalker on the Death Star II. Hoping to turn Luke to the dark side, Sidious manipulated the young Jedi’s emotions, provoking anger and fear. When Luke refused to join him, Sidious unleashed a torrent of Force lightning, nearly killing him.
The Emperor underestimated the bond between Luke and Darth Vader. In a moment of redemption, Vader turned on his master to save his son. Lifting Sidious, Vader threw the Sith Lord into the Death Star’s reactor core. This act destroyed Sidious’s body and ended the Empire’s reign of terror.

Sidious escaped his death after falling from the reactor shaft through Sith alchemy and cloning techniques. He shifted his essence to a clone body. From the hidden Sith planet of Exegol, he secretly restored his strength. The Final Order, a squadron of Sith Star Destroyers armed with planet-annihilating weaponry, symbolized Sidious’s strategy to regain dominance over the galaxy. The Sith Lord planned to utilize Rey, discovered to be his granddaughter, as the source of his strength.
Sidious’ schemes were destroyed when Rey opposed the dark side. By harnessing the power of past Jedi, Rey defeated Sidious by returning his Force lightning to him. The demise of Sidious signified the ultimate conclusion of the Sith Order.
Legacy of Darth Sidious
Darth Sidious made a lasting impression on the galaxy. The Republic's collapse, the rise of the Empire, and the Galactic Civil War all originated from his ambition and cleverness.
In his early years of combat, Sidious utilized a single red-bladed lightsaber, but eventually switched to using dual red lightsabers, like during his fight with Yoda. These lightsabers represented the hatred and strength of the Sith.
Sidious' skill in manipulation and deceit rendered him one of the most perilous characters in Star Wars. He emerged from Naboo's darkness to the Exegol throne and ruled the galaxy through fear, creating a legacy that shaped the Skywalkers’ bloodline and the entire saga.
