White, yellow, red, blue, pink, and many more – Lightsabers are all about bright, shiny, and impactful colors, right? However, it all changed when something big and iconic showed up in the Mandalorian: A Darksaber! It is a black-bladed lightsaber that is quite ancient. Making a comeback in the newest episode of the Star Wars event series, this weapon was a big reveal for many Star Wars fans.

Yet, the origin and whereabouts of the darksaber have even confused many hard-core fans as it has become quite intricate over the years. Want to know all about this unique piece of weaponry? Read on and learn about the mystery that is the darksaber.

About Darksabers

In the Star Wars universe, the Darksaber is quite ancient. With a black-energy blade lined with a snapping white edge, it serves as a powerful weapon that can cut through anything. The Darksabers were associated with a symbol of authority and leadership to the Mandalorians.

The black blade is not the only unique quality of the Darksaber. It is also shorter than a standard lightsaber and is shaped like a sword. Moreover, the Dark lightsaber also yields an electrical effect and has a higher pitched sound than traditional lightsabers, making it a really badass weapon to fight enemies.

The Mandalorian custom says that the Darksaber can only be acquired by defeating its previous owner in combat. Obtaining it through any other method will make the ownership illegal.

History of Darksaber

The Darksaber goes way back to the era that was before the Dark Times. It was the time of Tarre Vizsla, who was the first Mandalorian to become a Jedi Knight. Tarre Vizsla was the one who created this one-of-a-kind lightsaber, which had a flat and dark blade exuberating swirling energy.

Even though not much is known about Tarre Vizsla, we do know that he was an esteemed figure in Mandalore, who later became one of its most adored rulers. His legacy was so highly regarded that the dark saber, which was created by him, became a symbol of leadership and power. The Mandalorians rallied behind leaders who wielded the Darksaber with their full support and trust.

The “Trials of the Darksaber” episode in the Star Wars Rebels sheds some light on the history of the Darksabers. During this episode, Rau told Kanan Jairus:

“Legend tells that it was created over 1,000 years ago by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. After his passing, the Jedi kept the saber in their temple. That was until members of House Vizsla snuck in and liberated it.”

Once the Old Republic era came to an end, the history of the Darksaber became more convoluted and elaborate. To understand it better, let’s go through the different eras of history that included this iconic weapon.

Clone Wars

The dark saber stayed with the House Vizsla until the eventful days of the Clone Wars. Pre Vizsla, who fought against Duchess Satine’s pacifist canon of Mandalore, wielded the black blade against both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Maul to return the planet to its warrior roots.

Pre Vizsla boasted to Obi-Wan Kenobi:

“This lightsaber was stolen from your Jedi temple by my ancestors during the fall of the Old Republic. Since then, many Jedi have died upon its blade.”

Pre Vizsla, however, was killed by Maul in the Clone Wars episode “Shades of Reason, which made Maul the rightful owner of the Darksaber. In Maul’s hands, the Darksaber indeed became a vicious weapon. He used the Darksaber for his dark purposes.

With it, he killed Duchess Satine and fought against Darth Sidious. He also fought off many Jedi Masters before the dark saber came to rest on Dathomir during the Age of the Empire.

Age of Empire

Darth Maul kept the Darksaber until it came into the possession of Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Kanan Jarrus. The three warriors took the weapon away from Dathomir, where it went into the possession of the Emperor’s Hand.

Sabine later fought against the Hand and regained the dark saber. She finally gave it to Bo-Katan Kryze, who ultimately lost it during the Empire’s Great Purge of the Mandalorians. From there, the dark saber found its way to Moff Gideon until he came into the path of Din Djarin. Here is how it happened:

  • Bo-Katan battled the Empire and lost. He also lost hold of the dark saber and had to run out of Mandalore and go into hiding.
  • Moff Gideon was the one who then ended up with the Dark lightsaber after defeating Bo-Katan. He kept the dark lightsaber from the Imperial era into the New Republic era.
  • Moff Gideon later lost the Darksaber to the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin during their duel.

The Mandalorian’s Darksaber Explained

The Mandalorian’s Darksaber was an ancient black-bladed lightsaber with a uniquely shorter blade than most lightsabers. The Darksaber featured a crystal that acted as a conduit for Force energy. It was able to conduct the wielder’s thoughts and actions, carrying them to the blade’s current of power. As a result, the blade often produced an electrical effect in response to the intense emotions of the owner.

It featured an angular pommel, handguard, and slit-shaped blade emitter, all of which were made out of beskar. The sound emitted by the Darksaber’s blade was also higher in pitch than other lightsabers.

Darksaber Blade: The Darksaber emitted a flat blade reminiscent of a traditional sword and was a bit shorter than a normal lightsaber blade.

Darksaber Hilt: The darksaber had a jagged, angular hilt design.

The appearance of Black Bladed Lightsaber

The Lightsaber is the symbolic and most iconic weapon of the Star Wars galaxy. The long sword-like weapon with bright and electrifying colors emitting from it is one of the most powerful weapons in the galaxy far, far away. However, it became even more magnificent when Tarre Vizsle decided to build a lightsaber black in color – the dark saber.

Well, the Darksaber is essentially a lightsaber, but there are various significant differences between the two. When you first look at a dark lightsaber, you will find it to be both familiar and different from a lightsaber.

As it glows and retracts just like a standard lightsaber, it very clearly appears to be a type of lightsaber, but it has some stark differences. Firstly, the most obvious difference is the color. The dark saber is dark black, unlike any other lightsaber. In addition, the blade also ends in a more prominently tapered point, just like a sword. On the other hand, the traditional lightsabers come to a more delicate and symmetrical end.

Although the dark saber has all the features and accessories of a lightsaber, it has a badass vibe attached to it, which is lacking in a regular lightsaber. The black color and the sizzling white edge give it an aura that is sharper, more intimidating, and more solid-looking to the enemies. The dark lightsaber is also flatter and shorter than traditional lightsaber blades.

However, those are only the visual difference. The dark saber is unique from all the other lightsabers because it is constructed with both Jedi elements and Mandalorian originality. That’s because when it was built for the first time by Tarre Vizsla, he was a Mandalorian. Tarre Vizsla became the first Mandalorian to ever be included in the Jedi order. So, the unique blend of Jedi technology and Mandalorian heritage is what makes the dark saber one-of-a-kind.
