Gungi’s Lightsaber: The Story Behind the Wookie Jedi’s Unique Weapon

In the galaxy far, far away, lightsabers have unimaginable impact in the turn of events. While many of us mistake them for just lethal weapons, they are way more than that.

One of the most fascinating things about a lightsaber is that each piece tells a unique story. Every lightsaber in the SW universe has played an important part. An unexplainable connection between the character and his saber makes the story even more interesting.

Whether it's the Jedi Masters or Sith Lords, each side owes their legacy to their lightsabers. These weapons have a big influence on their wielders’ journeys. They symbolize a character’s true values and affiliation with the force.

To put it simply, we can tell the difference between the Force sides by looking at the blade color of the saber. The Jedi and Sith have an interesting thought process when differentiating their lightsabers.

The Jedi get their lightsabers by following their ‘Gathering’ ritual. In this tradition, a youngling travels to the sacred planet Ilum. The journey consists of a selected number of initiates chosen randomly. The time is based on the occurrence of a solar cycle, indicating the right time to visit the planet.

Once the younglings arrive, they move towards a cave where the kyber crystals are present. At this point, they face numerous obstacles, testing their force limits and patience. From there, the journey becomes personal, and the individual chooses the preferred crystal. After acquiring the crystal, the initiates construct their lightsabers under the supervision of Professor Huyang.

On the other side, the Sith follow their ‘bleeding’ process, which requires immense skill on their part. They pour negative emotions such as anger and hatred to bleed the crystal, turning it crimson red. The intention is to create a dark and deadly weapon with maximum power.

Comparatively, a lightsaber feels more personal in the case of Jedi. They symbolize it as more than a weapon. To the light side of the Force, the saber is a powerful entity that protects all beings from evil. Ultimately, all Jedi beings have a special bond with their weapons.

Gungi, a smart Jedi Wookie, embraced his lightsaber with courage and commitment. He had a strong connection with his saber that helped him overcome many difficulties.

Dive in to learn about Gungi’s lightsaber and how it helped him deal with multiple challenges on his journey.

The Making of Gungi’s Lightsaber

Gungi’s journey to get a lightsaber started with the Gathering tradition of the Jedi. Gungi was one of the very few Wookiees who had broken through the chains and got the chance to be taken as a youngling.

He and his peers went to the crystal cave under the guidance of Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka was a Padawan who informed the younglings of the challenges they might face. Gungi struggled at first when he met with a body of freezing water on Illum. Despite being known for not being patient, Gungi mastered Force meditation and waited for the water to freeze completely.

His resilience impressed Ahsoka and Master Yoda, who commended the Wookiee for overcoming a tough thorn. From there on, Gungi got his kyber crystal and met Huyang, who instructed the group on building their lightsabers.

On the professor’s advice, the Wookie Jedi and his companions experienced the power of the Force. It would guide them on their preferences, leading to a fine and personal end product. After envisioning his saber, Gungi demanded a wooden hilt to merge with the blade. Thus, Huyang made the wooden hilt from a Brylark tree bark.

The Brylark Tree was known for its strength, even compared to most metals. It was an optimal choice for the hilt of a lightsaber. When Gungi and the rest started building their sabers, their ship, Crucible, came under a surprise attack from a group of pirates.

The young group of the Jedi did well against the advancing pirates but was not entirely successful. Unfortunately, Ahsoka was dragged down, and the pirates took her prisoner. The group was not ready to engage in fighting, so they reached out to Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for immediate help. The wise master instructed them to wait for help before making rash decisions.

The time allowed Gungi to complete the construction of his lightsaber. The Wookie and his compatriots successfully rescued Ahsoka and even escaped the force of General Grievous.

Gungi had a green-bladed lightsaber. The green crystal portrayed a Jedi’s true nature and values of courage, justice, and wisdom.

The green blade was supported by a wooden hilt. Despite being an unconventional choice, it was still as strong as other hilts. Furthermore, it had a suitable grip, allowing its wielder’s physicality to blend perfectly with the overall structure.

Moreover, the inside components of the lightsaber had a metal casing to provide balance and protection. It came in handy, especially against hard blows from the opponent’s weapons.

Apart from being a well-crafted Jedi weapon, Gungi’s lightsaber was a perfect tribute to the Wookie culture.

Gungi’s Lightsaber and The Imperial Era

The Galactic Republic was quite unfavorable to the Jedi, which started an unforgettable series of events. An example is the ‘Great Jedi Purge’ that led to the elimination of many beings of the light side.

However, Gungi was one of the few members who survived the hardships. He avoided Order 66 and got through the period of the Clone Wars. He took lightsaber training under Master Tera Sinube in the Jedi Temple to polish his dueling skills.

Gungi’s greatest test came during his capture in the hands of the Vanguard Axis droids. The droids were merciless and tortured the Wookie to a great extent. Luckily, he was spotted by Omega, a member of the Clone Force 99 group. She helped the Wookiee take back his lightsaber and fought together against the retrieving droids.

Much to Gungi’s pleasure, he was able to escape, showing courage and skill with his lightsaber. Thanks to his strong character and decent dueling abilities, he got a safe passage back to his home planet, Kashyyyk.

Upon returning, he fought against the Trandoshans, who wanted to burn a Wookiee village. Gungli and his lightsaber heroics, with the support of Clone Force 99 members, took down the enemy’s Imperial tanks.

The Trandoshans countered, led by Babwa Venomor, and went after the Wookiees. The main target was Gungi, who had used his saber to slice the tanks. In the final confrontation, Gungi destroyed Venemor’s flamethrower by using his saber, which was left to deal with a roaring fire and netcasters.
