About Ulic Qel-Droma
Born to a well-respected Jedi Master Lien-Tsai Qel-Droma, Ulic Qel-Droma was always destined for greatness.
Since his early childhood, his mother trained him in various subjects. He was known to have the potency to excel in everything he put his mind on. Although he didn’t take much interest in mastering in his initial training days, he became a talented, Force-sensitive individual.
Qel-Droma and his brother Cay were sent to Jedi Master Arca Jeth, a renowned Force individual, to become Padawans. Master Jeth was the first to discover the potential in Qel-Droma’s abilities. He was also the first to point out his vulnerabilities and rash decision-making.
After finally becoming Padawans to Master Jeth, Qel-Droma and Clay were called to help restore peace in the Onderon system. The planet was going through a difficult period, struggling against the looming dark Forces. The soon-to-be Jedi Knight spent considerable time in the area with his fellow initiates and Master to fight against the opposition Forces.
Somewhere along the way, in the instance of the fight against the Krath, Qel-Dromo fell under the influence of the dark side. Long before the turning, he was informed of his change in allegiance by the spirit of Freedon Nadd, a dead but highly influential Sith Lord.
At the time, he didn’t give much importance to the spirit’s prediction. However, it was a tipping point, playing a vital role in turning the Jedi into a Dark Sith Lord. During his time on the dark side, he was menacing and unforgiving. He didn’t even spare his biological brother and former Jedi friends, who tried to pull him back to the light side. However, it didn’t take long for sense and remorse to come to the former Jedi Knight, who was devastated by his actions.
He was deprived of his Force abilities and left to wander alone in the galaxy. He sought redemption by giving information on valuable Sith strongholds to the Jedi forces. However, the grief was too much for the once-formidable Sith Lord, who exiled himself away from any prying eyes.
With the surprising appearance of his ex-lover’s daughter, Vima Sunrider, he came out from his self-imposed exile. He taught the child the Jedi ways, helping her grow as a Force-sensitive being. Right after turning a new leaf, he lost his life, battling the guilt and horrors of the past.
Ulic Qel-Droma’s Lightsaber
Ulic Qel-Droma was one of the best lightsaber duelists in the galaxy. He had a special talent for dueling and took down many opponents with his lightsaber on the battlefield.
His lightsaber consisted of a yellow crystal. It had a standard hilt, made in a similar style to other Jedi Knights. The lightsaber was of nominal length and width and complemented its wielder perfectly.
The kyber crystal in the saber was a reflection of Qel-Droma’s eventful life. The crystal colors define the start of his journey as a young Jedi disciple. It also portrays his growth as an individual as he gains morality and begins to mature.
The yellow shade in his lightsaber’s crystal is a representation of his exceptional combat skills. Before mastering Force abilities, Qel-Droma had already gained a name in terms of dueling. He was a highly skilled individual and courageous in approach. He was proficient in Djem So and Ataru, making him almost untouchable in one-on-one duels. He had an aggressive approach to dueling, giving a lesser chance to his opponents to exploit his defense.
Ulic Qel-Droma had a much greater influence alone than other characters’ roles. In the Onderon conflict, Ulic Qel-Droma’s lightsaber was of great help in taking down the dark Beast Riders. It also played an emphatic role during the confrontations with the Naddists, who were hell-bent on spreading darkness over the galaxy.
The lightsaber stayed with its wielder even after he turned to the Dark Side. He was reunited with Exar Kun, who shared his views on eliminating the Jedi at all costs.
In a surprising turn of events, he slayed Exar Kun with the help of his lightsaber. The fight was intense and well-matched, as both Qel-Droma and Kun were great fighters. However, the former Jedi Knight’s skill set was dominant, helping him gain the support of the clans.
While the lightsaber had a significant role to play in positive outcomes, it was one of the key factors that led to tragedy. Qel-Droma, in the prime days of darkness, killed his brother Cay after a lengthy duel. Initially, Cay did not expect his brother to react out of respect for their relationship, but he was proved wrong. Interestingly, the tragic event led to a long road of redemption for Ulic Qel-Droma, who was deeply moved by his actions.
Even after staying alone for much of the remainder of his life, Qel-Droma stayed in practice. Even without his Force powers, the expert duelist kept practicing, maintaining shape, and keeping up with his lightsaber skills.
