Hailing from the Core World of Alderaan, Ulic Qel-Droma was born into a family with a strong connection to the Force. His mother, Lien-Tsai Qel-Droma, was a renowned Jedi Master known for her loyalty and dedication to the Jedi Order. He had a younger brother, Cay, with whom he shared a close bond.
Both the Droma children showed promise and potential during their early ages. They were deemed suitable for Jedi training due to their Force sensitivity. However, Lien opted for patience, letting the young boys mature and get familiar with other subjects.
Despite being an accomplished master herself, Lien sent her sons to train under Jedi Master Arca Jeth, a well-accomplished Arkanian individual. Ulic Qel-Droma had a rough beginning to his training and was under criticism from his superiors.
The members of the Alderaanian Nobility looked down on the young Jedi, disappointed with his actions. Qel-Droma felt motivated and took the criticism in a positive stride. He worked hard on his abilities and studies and eventually earned the respect of his elders.
Interestingly, the young Jedi didn’t take much interest in mastering his Force abilities during his early training days. He chose to exert his energy in other areas. However, upon realizing his natural affiliation with the Force, his focus started shifting. He was more motivated and confident in his skills.
He also had exceptional lightsaber dueling skills. He started combat training with Master Jeth, quickly developing a taste for duels. His eagerness and recklessness in approach worried his guide. Master Jeth advised Qel-Droma to show patience and be wise when making decisions.
Despite the guidance, the young Jedi put complete faith in acting on his instincts for better results.
First Test: The Onderon Conflict
The Adventures of Qel-Droma in the Onderon System were quite influential in the shaping of his character. He, his brother Cay, their close friend Twi'lek Tott Doneeta, and Master Jeth came up against a challenging force of Beast Riders, a banned criminal group.
The purpose of the visit was to help end the Beast Wars, which had troubled the region for a while. The master advised his three Padawans to remain calm and show restraint against the Beast Riders. They successfully evaded their opponents, reaching the Onderon royalty, where they faced a new series of attacks from the Riders.
Upon consultation with his fellow apprentices, Qel-Droma decided to find a peaceful solution between the conflicting parties before going to battle. The attempt wasn’t fruitful and led to the start of a series of battles.
The Beast Riders were unforgiving, aggressive, and fighting for the dark side of the Force. The resisting forces were thwarted, with the Riders coming out on top. Master Jeth blamed Qel-Droma and portrayed his disappointment in his Padawan. He felt that his student should have done better with an early detection of the present Dark Forces.
The Naddist Attack
The Onderon planet was yet to properly recover from its previous conflicts, where the Naddist cult members launched a surprising attack. The Naddists were loyal worshippers of the dead Sith Lord, Freedon Nadd, and were capable of using the old Sith magic.
The cults were difficult to deal with as they turned the Iziz city of Onderon into a live warzone. Master Jeth instructed Qel-Droma and fellow compatriots to defend the uprising. It was difficult to find the exact reason for the dark side’s sudden cover over the city.
Upon realizing the presence of King Ommin’s dark hold and Sith magic after a violent confrontation, Qel-Droma and his colleagues called for further support from the Jedi Order. After an exhaustive series of events, the Jedi side won the battle.
Qel-Droma had a large part to play as he skillfully used the light side of the Force to help uplift the dark spirits over the planet. He famously used his yellow lightsaber to end Ommin’s life. In an interesting turn of events, the spirit of Freedon Nadd appeared and predicted Ulic Qel-Dorma to be a great Sith Lord.
While the Jedi Knight didn’t ponder much on the prediction and was confused, little did he know of his soon-to-be falling to the dark side.

The confrontations with the Krath were complicated and were a final blow to the Jedi presence in the region. After a short period of peace, the Krath rose and spoiled the party. They made life difficult for the residing Jedi, especially Qel-Droma and his colleagues.
In a meeting to decide the fate of the Krath threat, many advised using superior military strength, but Qel-Droma had other plans. He wanted to infiltrate the enemy by pretending to be one of them. His plan was met with strong opposition. The Jedi forces struggled against the advancing enemy.
During the confrontations, Qel-Droma witnessed the death of his mentor, Master Jeth. He was rightfully devastated and vowed to take revenge. Unbeknownst to his fellow compatriots, he followed his plan to pretend to be a fallen Jedi.
The plan backfired, turning the once formidable Jedi Knight into a member of the dark side of the Force. His relationship with Aleema Keto didn’t help as she guided him towards the dark side.
Moreover, the arrival of a powerful Sith spirit fueled Qel-Droma’s preference for the dark side. Together, he and the former Jedi Knight, Exar Kun, vowed to bring chaos to the galaxy.
The New Sith Lord: Ulic Qel-Droma
After turning dark and proving Freedon Nadd’s prediction, Qel-Droma became an even more brutal force for the Sith. The newly acclaimed Sith Lord became an unavoidable issue for the Jedi who didn’t like his betrayal.
He became the leader of the Krath and carried out targeted operations on the Republic’s forces and resources. He even attempted to lay an attack on Coruscant, where he was betrayed by his lover Aleema Keto, leaving him in the hands of the Jedi forces.
After getting caught, he was tried as a war criminal and an imposter to the Jedi Order. He was eventually rescued by Exar Kun and returned to his former self. Unsurprisingly, his first action was to kill Aleema and plan a big attack on one of the Order’s strongholds.
One of his most enraging moments in the dark side was his slaying of his brother Cay in front of his former colleagues. The action even surprised Qel-Droma, leading to his exit from the dark side and loss of force power at the hands of Nomi Sunrider, a Jedi Master and former lover.
Road to Redemption and Death
After returning to the light, Qel-Droma was desperate for self-redemption. He started by revealing some important hideaways and secrets of Exar Kun, leading to the Dark Lord’s elimination.
However, he turned to a life of self-exile, mourning the loss of his brother and living with regret in the cold weather of Rhen Var. With no force power and influence, he was certain of his death. However, an unexpected appearance of Master Jeth’s spirit encouraged him to live by seeking inner strength for redemption.
The inspiration came in the face of Vima Sunrider, his former lover’s daughter. Her sudden appearance and feelings of pity convinced the former knight to train her. Qel-Droma taught her of the Jedi ways until the point he refused, as he had no Force powers.
Unexpectedly, he witnessed the arrival of Nomi Sunrider, who eventually forgave him. However, seizing a moment of weakness, he was shot dead by a spacer, Hoggon. Just after moments of true redemption, a blaster shot ended the life of Qel-Droma.
