Who is Kanan Jarrus? A Jedi’s Place in the Rebellion

Order 66 was the fall of the Jedi Order. Kanan Jarrus was among the few who survived the purge and went into hiding. After that, Kanan was disconnected from his Jedi identity until a spark of rebellion reignited his faith. In Star Wars Rebels, he was voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. His story reappeared in the animated series The Bad Batch, the Kanan comics, and other canon materials.

Early Life and Jedi Training

Kanan Jarrus was once Caleb Dume, a bright Jedi padawan who was born on Coruscant. He was taken to the Jedi Temple when he was an infant. He was trained under the guidance of many Jedi masters. Under Depa Billaba, he learned lightsaber combat. With Depa, Caleb formed a close bond, viewing her as both a mentor and parental figure. 

Caleb accompanied Depa Billaba on different missions across the galaxy. They fought together during the Clone Wars. Caleb saw the horrors of war alongside her. He also admired his master’s ability to balance compassion with strength. 

Order 66: The Fall of the Jedi

When Order 66 was issued, Caleb and Depa Billaba were stationed on the planet Kaller, leading their clone battalion in a campaign against the Separatists. Suddenly, their troopers turned against them. Depa Billaba fought bravely, holding off the clones to give her padawan time to escape. She sacrificed herself for Caleb, leaving him with guilt and regrets for his entire life. 

Life in Hiding 

After surviving the purge, Caleb’s trust in the Order was shattered. He abandoned his Jedi identity and did not use Force for anything. He knew the Inquisitors were searching for the remaining Jedi. Therefore, he destroyed the Jedi communicator and opted for the name Kanan Jarrus suggested by a smuggler friend. After that, Kanan had no particular life goal and lived only to survive. He worked as a smuggler, mercenary, and freighter pilot. 

Kanan also hid his unique lightsaber, featuring a detachable hilt design that allowed him to conceal it by separating it into two pieces. This clever design once reflected Kanan’s resourcefulness.

Forming a Ghost Crew

Kanan’s life changed when he met Hera Syndulla, a Twi’lek freedom fighter from Ryloth and the pilot of the Ghost. Hera was dedicated to resisting the Empire, and she saw potential in Kanan despite his reluctance to fight. Her unwavering belief in the Rebellion reignited Kanan’s sense of purpose.

Hera recruited Kanan to her cause, and together they formed the Ghost Crew, a small group of rebels. The group included Sabine Wren, Garazeb Orrelios, C1-10P, and Ezra Bridger.  Over time, their partnership grew into a deep bond of mutual respect, trust, and love. Hera became Kanan’s anchor, helping him find the strength to confront his past and embrace his role as a Jedi once more.

Kanan Training Ezra Bridger

Kanan met Ezra Bridger on Lothal. When Kanan sensed Ezra’s potential, he thought to train him but was reluctant at first. However, he decided to take him as his padawan and complete what was once left incomplete in his own life. Ezra and Kanan shared different adventures. Within no time, Kanan became a fatherly figure to him. 

Kanan taught Ezra to navigate the temptations of the dark side. Their bond grew stronger with each challenge they faced, from battles with the Empire to encounters with ancient Jedi and Sith artifacts.

Role in Key Battles

Kanan Jarrus played an important role in the following main conflicts and battles. 

1. Rescuing Ezra from the Grand Inquisitor

Kanan accepted himself as a true Jedi when his padawan, Ezra, was captured by the Empire. He encountered the Grand Inquisitor. Kanan was determined to save Ezra to prove himself a worthy Jedi Master. 

2. The Battle of Malachor

On the ancient Sith world of Malachor, Kanan fought alongside Ezra and Ahsoka Tano but suffered a devastating loss—Maul blinded him in battle. Despite this, he adapted and became even more attuned to the Force, proving that a Jedi’s strength went beyond sight.

3. Kanan’s Final Stand

In the fight to liberate Lothal, Kanan made his ultimate sacrifice. While rescuing Hera from Imperial captivity, he used the Force to hold back an explosion, ensuring his friends escaped. In his final moments, his sight returned, allowing him to see Hera one last time before he perished.

Kanan’s Legacy

Kanan Jarrus’s legacy is of courage, hope, and selflessness. He embodied the ideals of the Jedi, even after the Order’s fall. His teachings lived on through Ezra Bridger, who carried forward the principles of the Jedi.
