What Happened to Princess Leia in Jabba's Palace? Scene Breakdown

In the history of Star Wars canon, the opening scenes in Return of the Jedi are top tier. Tension is present throughout each scene, where the characters have full control over their actions. Among all scenes, one involves mainly Princess Leia Organa, who performs a difficult mission on Tatooine. Its unfriendly environment is already challenging enough; however, that is not the actual difficulty she will encounter. Her actual challenge starts when she reaches Jabba's palace. The Palace of Jabba is constructed with stone passageways, which makes it the best place for a villain to reside. The Palace of Jabba is ideal for someone who is at the bottom rung of society, such as Jabba himself. While Darth Vader ruled through fear and military force, Jabba held power through corruption and crime — two sides of the same broken galaxy. This place was initially a monastery for b’omarr monks. They were still there, but now lived with their brains being preserved in nutrient jars. Therefore, this place was the best for an iconic and electric rescue.

The Boushh Disguise

Leia Organa had already started planning before she even set foot in the huge palace. According to canon, Leia not only finds a helmet but also wishes for the best. She, along with Chewbacca and R2 D2 go after Maz Kanata on the planet of Ord Mantell. This is where they were ambushed by Boba Fett. The fight was short, and Leia had him without a weapon, along with R2-D2 having him stunned so much so that he was no longer conscious. Maz Kanata gave his opinion by telling Leia that she should impersonate him by wearing his armour to get in Jabba's inner circle.

Though it may seem that it was a simple costume exchange. It was not. It was a measured, important mental tactic. Boushh was known as a merciless mercenary. Leia entered the palace with a thermal detonator while demanding that fifty thousand credits be given to Chewbacca. She was iconic and played her role very well. She used a vocoder built into her helmet, which allowed her to mask her voice so that it would come off as cold and with a mechanical growl. This was the reason why she was able to fool Jabba's court for a brief time. However, Jabba, being naturally suspicious, noticed that she had a smaller stature.

The Throne Room Gambit

The palace was covered with darkness, and everyone was asleep. The air was heavy and smoky when Leia made her way into the palace wearing her armour. She was moving towards Han Solo, who was hanging frozen in carbonite inside an alcove. The entire palace was asleep, which is why whenLeiaa by accident touced the nar shaddaa wind chime, it seemed loud. Once she found the controls, she started to defrost Han Solo. Only after Han Solo woke up from hibernation sickness and was blind and confused about his whereabouts did Leia reveal her identity. This sickness is properly documented because it causes its victims to have temporary blindness and confusion. Leia, after revealing her indetntity she, told him that she was ‘’someone who loves him.’’

However, this was only smoke and mirrors. Once everything was out in the open, Jabba revealed himself. He was laughing and was with his cronies, which included Salacious B. Crumb. Salacious was the laughing monkey lizard who sat on a raised platform. It was copying Jabba's malicious amusement. Jabba the Hutt had already known that he was being deceived and had suspicions about the smaller-statured imposter. According to canon, Boba Fett had already warned Jabba that the real Boba Fett was most probably dead. This is what made him suspicious and confirmed that it was the imposter. Jabba was never someone who left any opportunity that came its way. He let the whole show that Leia was putting on carry out. Just so he could taste and savor the betrayal all the more.

The Slave Girl and the Chain

Once the gig was up, Leia was forced to be Jabba the Hutt's slave dancer. This was the most well-known, though wrongfully so, role she had to play in her life. She had replaced Oola. Oola was a green-skinned Twi'lek dancer who had been fed to the fearsome rancor because she had not agreed to the advancement made by Jabba on her. Leia was now dressed in the legendary bikini made of metal. She was put in a collar and a leash, which was chained to the raised platform where Jabba sat. This was done to humiliate Leia, along with the rebel leader, and showcase her as his new trophy. The bikini she wore was made of lightweight metal alloy. It is absolutely sinister, as it is to remind her of her captivity, as any sudden movement would cause the material to dig in.

However, this was not something that let Leia define her. Her resilience was praise worthy When luke skywalker comes and the execution of the great pit of Carkoon goes wrong. This is where Leia decides to take her chances. As everything becomes chaotic on the sail barge Khetanna. Everyone starts panicking. Leia utilises the symbol of her captivity, the chain, as her weapon. It is one of the most defining moments for any female Star Wars character in the entire saga — turning imprisonment into power.  With boosted strength, she uses the chain to choke Jabba to death and puts his reign of terror to an end. Moments after, R2D2, who was serving the drinks on the barge, frees her from her restraints. Gave Luke Skywalker's lightsaber  to him before they wrecked the barge and escaped.

A Supporting Shadow: Bib Fortuna

Though Jabba was the bigger threat, Bib Fortuna was also an obstacle that could not be underestimated. Bib Fortuna, in this scene, can be seen dressed in his signature lavish robes. Along with his pale lekku thrown over his shoulder. He was the first character who made Boushh suspicious by passing his schemes through Jabba's ears. Bib Fortuna adds a lot more depth and deception to the already tense and intrigue-rich palace. He was the symbol of constant surveillance, which almost became the reason Leia's mission nearly failed. Bib Fortuna also survived the barge explosion by swimming through the wreckage and coming back to the palace. For a short time, he also sat on the throne. However, this was short-lived as he was killed by Boba Fett, which put Jabba's dynasty to a total end.

FAQ’s

Did Jabba know Leia was disguised as Boushh?

In canon, it is not said openly, but yes, it is very much implied that Jabba might have known about it already. Boba Fett had told the Hutt that Boushh was no longer alive. This made Jabba suspect Leia, who was the imposter. However, he let it happen because he wanted to catch the rebels then and there and to punish them also.

What happened to the real Boushh?

Boushh, the real one, died just a bit of time before Leia’s mission. He was blackmailing the black sun crime syndicate, who killed him. Leia made use of his armour after stunning him in Ord Mantell. This was because not many people knew of his death in the underworld.

Why did Leia choose to disguise herself as a bounty hunter?

She did it because Maz Kanata suggested it to her. Leia knew that if she was disguised as a bounty hunter, that was her best chance to gain access to Jabba without coming off as suspicious. The Outer Rim has always rewarded those who think independently — from rogue Jedi like Qui-Gon Jinn to rebel operatives like Leia herself. Chewbacca was wanted; she brought him as a prisoner. This was to have a perfect cover to go through a very strongly guarded palace.

Is the palace used for anything after Jabba’s death?

The palace was used by bib fortuna, who sat on the throne for a very short time. In the canon timeline, after Return of the Jedi, it is shown in The Mandalorian that Boba Fett comes back and kills Fortuna. Reclaims the throne for himself and puts an end to Jabba's rule and lineage.

How did R2-D2 factor into Leia's plan inside the palace?

The significance of R2-D2 to Leia’s mission was crucial, although it remained hidden. When C3PO was acting as Jabba’s translator, it was R2-D2 that offered drinks on the boat known as Khetanna. This wasn’t by accident, but rather it was a deliberate act, part of Luke’s contingency plan. There was a compartment in R2-D2 that held Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. And during the chaos resulting from the failed execution, R2-D2 presented Luke with the weapon and removed Leia from her shackles. This allowed her to strangle Jabba to his death. R2-D2, being hidden and under the radar, was the perfect alibi both Leia and Luke needed. This turned the mission gon wrong into a rebel victory.
