Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia: The Meaning Behind the Famous Scene

In Star Wars canon, the palace of Jabba the Hutt is one of the most iconic places. It is one that is memorable and a place in which so many actions happen. The air is filled with smoke. It is combined with a harsh and clashing scream of the Max Rebo Band. From different worlds, a lot of aliens come to gather at all alcoves. They drink and scheme just so they can get the attention of the huge creature who sits at the top of them all. In the den, Jabba Desilijic Tiure is found to be the center of attention. He is a pile of flesh and wickedness and watches over everyone in a very reptilian fashion. His yellow eyes scream of odd satisfaction. When we take a look at his side, we see a woman standing. She is chained and was once a princess of Alderaan as well as a senator of the Imperial Senate and leader of the Rebel Alliance — one of the most powerful female Star Wars characters in the entire galaxy . When Leia is forced into captivity, her metal bikini became iconic. It's also one of those scenes which is debated a lot but also often misunderstood by the fans in Star Wars history.

The Hutt Who Ate the Outer Rim

It adds more detail to the infamous scene if we know the background about Jabba the Hutt. Understanding Jabba the Hutt is very important, especially according to the canon timeline. Jabba the Hutt ranks amongst the most intelligent villains or the dark characters in the galaxy. The Hutt species was regarded by the galaxy as not worthy. Because they were primal and slug-like. This is exactly why the outsiders suffered heavy losses, both in terms of their lives and wealth and prestige. Jabba Desilijic Tiure didn't build the criminal empire he ruled by himself. Rather, he got it from his father, Zorba. After which, he was responsible for taking care of it and expanding it further. Jabba the Hutt expanded it to the outer rim territories using cruel and harsh force, but that wasn't the only thing required to pull it off. Jabba himself was very strategic and also patient. Just for the sake of the results, he could wait years if it meant he would benefit greatly.

Jabba being on Tatooine was not by chance. It was a very clever move by Jabba. Because the planet sat in a very important location according to the hyperspace routes, as it was an intersection. It was also very far away from the dark empire, so that operations which were unregulated could be carried out. But that didn't mean that it was so detached that spices, weapons, and slaves couldn't be moved. The palace where Jabba resided was previously a monastery of the B’omarr order. It was a sect of monks who believed that if they removed their brains in a set of nutrient jars, they could then transcend. This was quite an amusement for Jabba. What was even more iconic and haunting was that even when Jabba had the palace to himself, the monks still remained in the lower levels of the palace.

Degradation was used a lot in Jabba's court as it also communicated his ideals. No matter if they made in to Jabbas inner circle, it was clear that they were held in their place by either something they owed Jabba or fear or pure ambition. Even Bib Fortuna, who was the slimy and pale Twilek majordomo, was not loyal to Jabba. Only loyal so he could gain protection from Jabba because he had enemies. The guards he had were the Gamorreans, who were used as pure brutes. Jabba utilized their strength and ability to follow orders. The bounty hunters, such as Boba Fett, were no more than surface-level and very transactional alliances. The loyalty was til only to them, and they were ready to be loyal if there was a higher bidder. This type of brutal and cruel world was in which Leia Organa had set foot.

The Gamble of Boushh

The way Leia decided to act when she reached Jabba's palace was extremely brave. When she decided to be disguised as a Ubese bounty hunter, Boushh, she committed to the act entirely. She too takes Chewbacca and even spoke in very harsh language, which the species was known for: xenophobia and brutality. When she activated the thermal detonator, it was not a fluke or a tactic but rather real. In canon, it is well known that Leia did her research in the Ubesian culture. She knew if she showed weakness, it would start her downfall. In the beginning, her act was very convincing. So much so that even Jabba was only suspicious and not very sure. The fifty thousand credits she gave Jabba was a clever move meant to undermine her in front of Jabba. She wanted to be sure that she could be close to frozen Han Solo. Instead of trying to bargain, she was there to take him. Just when the mission was bound to be a success, everything came tumbling down. Jabba laughed cruelly as he let Leia know that he had let the show go on for his amusement.

A Dancer Named Oola

Leia, facing such humiliation, can be given more insight if we look at Oola. The Twilek dancer who was once a princess of Alderaan and was given to Jabba as a slave and dancer. According to canon, Oola never gave in to Jabba the Hutt. When the audience sees her refusal to submit when she was being pulled and dragged by the chains, it was not the first time she was defiant. However, it definitely was the last time because then she was fed to the rancor. It was to serve as a warning to the court and for the amusement of Jabba. The count never stopped. So when Leia was given the same position as Oola as a dancer. It was a subtle hint that Jabba saw her as Oola. Unworthy and ultimately replaceable.

The Weight of the Chain

It is actually ironic that the metal bikini and the collar have become a widely known iconic scene. It makes the meaning of this scene, and the outfit, lost in the popularity. It is often misunderstood that Jabba dressed her in this outfit because he found her attractive. According to canon, Hutts had different biology than humans. This is why any type of attraction was not possible. Jabba took pleasure and amusement in watching Leia being humiliated. It was a way of taking ownership. Leia was someone who was from the higher ranks of the Imperial Senate and faced Darth Vader — enforcer of an Emperor whose lightsaber few ever saw and fewer survived — without fear.  Forcing such a person to submit was a power move. The chain was a physical reminder of her captivity and a bold statement. However, she doesn't admit defeat. When not under Jabba's eyesight, she is seen to have a very calculated expression. She is taking into account the guards' movement and how the court operates. This is where the chain, which in the viewpoint of Jabba symbolises a leash, is seen as a weapon by Leia. Whatever time she spends with him is a lesson in her picking up on his weakness.

When Luke arrives in the throne room, he is very confident. Someone fit to be a Jedi knight — carrying on the legacy of masters like the actor who brought Obi-Wan Kenobi to life across generations of Star Wars storytelling.  This is advantageous for Luke because Jabba doesn't know the Jedi.During the time Jabba came into power, the order — once protected by legends like Obi-Wan Kenobi — had already been defeated and gone extinct. This is why the confrontation was met with such a concussion by Jabba and Luke as well. When Jabba threatens Luke by referencing the rancor, he doesn't falter. But rather, he demands that he free them or prepare to die.The lightsaber hidden in R2-D2 — with a hilt Luke himself constructed, and fans today can explore their own custom lightsaber hilts — was a clever move and served a very important purpose. The declaration. According to canon, the building of the lightsaber is a very important and sacred task. The green blade coming alive was a declaration that he had completed his training — just as the color of every kyber crystal, even the rare black kyber crystal, carries its own meaning and story.  For Star Wars fans who wish to also have a part of the galaxy and experience the moment like Luke when he activated his lightsaber. They can use a Neopixel lightsaber from Neo Sabers, which is much better than the standard sabers. . They are much more realistic. Neopixel lightsabers have the brightest, low, and buttery activation with motion-sensitive sound.

The Kill

Jabba's death was more of an execution, and Leia does not disappoint. She takes advantage of the very chain that Jabba sees as a symbol of her captivity to kill him. Just as Luke cuts the guards and the barge becomes unsteady and tips to the side, Leia uses the chain used to humiliate her to strangle the slug-like creature to death. The chain, which once symbolised her as property, became the instrument for her freedom. Salacious B. Crumb screams, and Bib Fortuna sees the entire empire crumble. When Jabba saw her in chains, he forgot that she was a general. He only saw her as a broken human and a slave. The iconic metal bikini and the chain on the collar never changed who Leia Organa was at her core. It only served as fuel to fulfil her purpose. To kill Jabba.

FAQ’s

Why did Jabba the Hutt keep Leia alive instead of feeding her to the rancor as he did with Oola?

It was a very calculated move by Jabba. Oola was just an amusement even in her death and more of a warning for those in his court. Leia was very precious. She was very valuable as a political prisoner. If she were humiliated, then the galaxy would understand that Jabba the Hutt didn't see even the Rebel Alliance as a threat. If he had killed it would have been useless, but because he put her in chains and captivity, it drove the point much more brutally to everyone across the galaxy. It boosted his reputation.

Was Jabba the Hutt capable of feeling any form of attraction to Leia?

It's not possible because Hutts are hermaphroditic gastropods. Meaning he couldn't be attracted to Leia; Jabba being interested in her was because of power and his having ownership over her. Even the metal bikini was chosen purely because it would be degrading to her, not because it would attract hutt.

What happened to Bib Fortuna after Jabba's death?

According to canon, he was able to remain alive even after the destruction of the sail barge. He also attempted to take Jabba's empire for himself. However, it was short-lived because Boba Fett came back. He killed Fortuna and took the throne. This is shown in the book Boba Fett.

A standard replica has only one light source in the hilt. However, a Neopixel lightsaber has a strip of programmable LEDs inside the strip. This is to allow a very real experience as the blade goes on from the base to the tip. The amazing flickering effects and very responsive color changes. This technology makes it easy for users to swing and have unified sound effects with motion. It makes it a highly immersive experience, best for collectors and duellists both!
