Come along with us as we navigate the interstellar adventures of Baylan Skoll, a character who crosses the lines between Jedi and Sith and shows how the world is full of stories.

Baylan Skoll Orange Lightsaber: Purpose And Meaning

The lightsaber known as Baylan Skoll lightsaber was utilized by the Jedi Knight Baylan Skoll. The blade was orange-red in color. During his tenure as a mercenary, Skoll effectively wielded his lightsaber as a weapon.

He used it to eliminate Captain Hayle of the New Republic, as well as numerous soldiers from the Republic. These actions transpired when Skoll and his student Shin Hati orchestrated an assault on the Vesper, with the objective of liberating Morgan Elsbeth.

The hologram of the lightsaber’s hilt allowed Huyang, who had originally assisted Skoll in creating it, to determine who owned it. In the course of his quest to find Ezra Bridger, Baylan Skoll engaged in a lightsaber duel with Ahsoka Tano.

Construction of Baylan Lightsaber

Baylan Skoll possesses a unique lightsaber that sets it apart from other Jedi weapons in the entire galaxy. The Huyang reveals that Baylan chose a very distinctive design for his lightsaber’s hilt, which is something the Jedi haven’t seen in a long time.

The interesting part, though, begins right here. After a thorough redesign, Baylan renames his lightsaber a “red claymore saber.”

Why Baylan Skoll Had An Orange-Red Lightsaber?

Baylan Skoll’s lightsaber shines with an orange hue, a color that interestingly stands between the light and dark sides of the Force. This unique choice hints at his unconventional position in the universe.  Unlike the typical Jedi with blue or green blades, or the Sith with their red lightsabers, Baylan’s orange lightsaber suggests a character not bound by traditional affiliations.

Huyang said that every Jedi lightsaber he had seen in the past five hundred years paled in comparison to Skoll’s lightsaber. Not only is the orange blade distinctive, but Huyang was alluding to the hilt’s shape as well.

We still don’t know what makes an orange lightsaber different from any other color, as it’s a first in the canonical universe. In canon, not all lightsaber colors have specific meanings, unlike in the Expanded Universe where every color of kyber crystal had a lore explanation.

Reasons for Skoll’s Orange Bladed Saber

Like the red and white lightsabers, the orange lightsaber might have some history. Orange can be seen as a combination of the positive attributes of yellow and the negative attributes of red.

This suggests that, similar to Mace Windu’s ability to achieve equilibrium without succumbing to the Dark Side and maintaining his status as a Jedi, individuals who wield orange lightsabers are not automatically affiliated with the Sith.

The impact of this situation on Baylan Skoll’s perspective and understanding in Ahsoka is uncertain, particularly given his assertion that he is not affiliated with the Jedi, nor that he is potentially a true Sith lord.

In April 2023, Dave Filoni revealed that the Baylan and Shin Hati lightsabers colors were deliberate. There’s more to it than just the color red. Filoni aimed to convey, particularly to the younger generation, that these characters possess depths that are not immediately apparent.  Everything about these lightsabers is purposeful; the colors represent different aspects of Baylan and Shin’s journey. The dazzling light from their lightsabers is like a coded message. Terrific, isn’t it?

Interestingly, Baylan doesn’t align with the Jedi principles; instead, he leans more towards the dark side of the Force. His lightsaber color becomes a symbol, reflecting this dynamic personality. It’s not just about the cool factor; the orange glow tells the story of a character who walks a path of his own in the cosmic drama.

Baylan Skoll Orange Lightsaber Meaning

A lightsaber’s color reflects a wielder’s personality and their connection with the Force. It shows their affinity and the way they use the Force. When figuring out what an orange lightsaber means, you can think about the meanings of yellow and red lightsabers.

An orange lightsaber might suggest a practical hope, understanding that the path to a better future involves sacrifices. This could mean being willing to make tough choices for the greater good, even if it means causing harm with their lightsaber.

This shift from a once-diplomatic yellow lightsaber wielder to a more mercenary role fits Baylan Skoll’s story. However, looking at Baylan Skoll’s personality could lead to a different conclusion.

An orange lightsaber wielder is a Force master who has mastered not just the Force’s Light and Dark Sides, but also their own emotions and self-awareness.

Discovering the true meaning of Orange-Red lightsaber

Baylan shares traits that align with a Jedi Sentinel—he is friendly, hopeful, and not quick to use his lightsaber. Not only that, he keeps his cool, is patient, and understands. However, his dedication is laser-focused on a distant goal.

Everything else in his journey serves this overarching goal for power. The orange hue of his lightsaber reflects this enduring hope, suggesting he believes his quest for power can bring a true and worthwhile peace, even if it comes at the cost of bloodshed.

Anger and hatred drove Darth Vader to seek power. In contrast, Baylan Skoll’s motivation for seeking power is more optimistic. Although the cause of it is yet unknown, it is obvious that his optimism and hope are clouded by some unfavorable emotional Dark Side trait.

“For Baylan Skoll as a Sith, having an orange lightsaber doesn’t strictly mean he is all on the Dark Side. It is not exactly Light Side either. It suggests he might be more of a gray Jedi, not fully Jedi or Sith but somewhere in between, using both for his own goals.”

Baylan has observed that Shin Hati’s lack of patience could lead to his downfall, suggesting that patience may be a prominent characteristic among orange lightsaber users too.

The true significance of Baylan’s orange lightsaber in “Ahsoka” remains uncertain. It is currently too early to figure out its meaning, and it may be far too late to ascertain whether Baylan’s perseverance is a genuine virtue or a deceptive one.

First Appearance

Baylan Skoll’s lightsaber made its grand entrance in the teaser trailer for the Ahsoka television series, premiering in August 2023.

The first time we laid eyes on this unique lightsaber was in the episode titled “Part One: Master and Apprentice” of the Ahsoka series.

That is where the orange glow of Baylan’s lightsaber first lit up the screen, capturing the attention of fans everywhere.

Does Baylan Skoll Consider Himself A Jedi?

Baylan Skoll is a hired assassin who wields a lightsaber. He is responsible for mentoring his apprentice, Shin Hati. However, it should be clear that while Skoll had a previous connection with the renowned Anakin Skywalker, Baylan Skoll is not a Jedi.

Skoll, who has now formed an alliance with Morgan Elsbeth, the previous Magistrate of Calodan, finds himself in a post-Jedi and post-Empire era. He continues to be a cunning warrior, driven by the pursuit of power, and holds the belief that another conflict is bound to occur in the future.

Baylan Skoll’s loyalty to the Jedi Order remains ambiguous, given his self-description as “not a Jedi” despite possessing a Padawan and an understanding of the Jedi history.

Given his lack of loyalty to any one institution, Baylan Skoll could be considered the very first Dark Jedi in the new films. Baylan Skoll isn’t a true Sith.

It is highly probable that Baylan’s decision to mentor a Padawan named Shin Hati is influenced by his own experiences and training in the ways of the Force.

Baylan, a former Jedi who departed from the Order following the Clone Wars, understands the significance of sharing his knowledge, despite no longer adhering to the Jedi path.

Baylan Skoll possesses a unique dynamic, as he leans more towards the dark side rather than aligning with the principles of the Jedi.

How Did Baylan Skoll And Shin Hati Meet?

Baylan Skoll and Shin’s initial meeting is left unexplained in the Ahsoka series. They are already in the master and apprentice dynamic, although it is unclear whether Baylan found out Shin or Shin Hati sought out Baylan Skoll. Their connection has been hidden in mystery as Force-sensitive individuals are becoming less common.

Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati

Since Baylan isn’t following Jedi rules anymore, he may have a special bond with Shin. They could even be connected. We still don’t know how they met, which makes the story even more interesting.

For Jedi, the meeting happens in the structured Jedi Order, but for post-Order 66 characters like Baylan, finding Force-sensitive individuals is trickier. The circumstances of how they met are still unknown, adding depth to the story.

Episode 4 goes into more detail about Baylan’s time as a Jedi, but Shin’s past is still a secret. She is close in age to Sabine Wren and probably wasn’t in the Jedi Order. This means that Baylan probably found and taught her after Order 66, when Force-sensitive people were dispersed out.

The specifics of their meeting after Order 66 are unknown. Maybe a younger Shin sought Baylan’s guidance for a new purpose, or Baylan convinced her to join him.

Did Baylan Skoll Survive Order 66 or not?

Baylan Skoll not only survived the Order 66 chaos but managed to escape the aftermath of the Jedi Purge. Despite the Jedi Order crumbling, he didn’t fade into oblivion; instead, he took on the role of a mercenary, navigating the shifting tides of the galaxy.

Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati

Now, surviving Order 66 is no small feat. Baylan served during the Clone Wars and grew up in the Jedi Order, so evading the infamous directive that wiped out the Jedi is a rare accomplishment. He isn’t a full-blown Sith, though, and in the years after the Order’s fall, he became a hunted figure.

The mystery deepens—how did Baylan manage to survive? Maybe he saw the storm brewing and decided to lie low. However, considering his Force strength and lightsaber skills, it’s plausible that he didn’t just disappear. He might have found a way to keep up with his Jedi training, staying under the radar while the galaxy underwent profound changes.

Baylan Take Shin To Peridea

When Baylan Skoll takes Shin to Peridea, the barren wasteland raises questions for Shin Hati about what lies ahead. Baylan, however, remains mysterious about his goals, emphasizing the power waiting for them on Peridea. When Shin inquires about the Jedi, Baylan expresses a love for the Jedi concept but a disdain for the lies and false ideals of the Jedi Order.

Rather than aiming to establish a new power for people to respect or rebuild the Jedi Order in his image, Baylan seeks something more profound. He talks about a power in Peridea that seems to call to him, a force he believes can bring an end to the cycle of hatred, death, and destruction associated with the Jedi Order and their adversaries.

He tells Shin Hati that he wants to go back to the very beginning, aiming to break this destructive cycle. Although Baylan remains somewhat elusive when discussing this, it’s clear that his journey to Peridea is driven by a desire for a transformative power that can reshape the destiny of the galaxy.

Why did Skoll bring Shin Hati to Peridea?

It is common for a Padawan to accompany their master to learn from them, but Baylan has brought Shin Hati to Peridea only to leave her behind. So, Why did Skoll bring her along?

He may have initially expected Peridea to contact Shin Hati upon her arrival, but when he saw that she remained steadfast in her position, Baylan chose to separate from her.

Baylan appears wise, and Shin has expressed doubts about Baylan Skoll’s intentions since working with Night sister Morgan. The reason for Baylan taking his Padawan to another galaxy is still unknown.

Baylan Skoll Goal On Peridea

In the Ahsoka series, the purpose of Baylan Skoll’s presence on Peridea remains unclear. He is not very clear about what he wants, especially when he is surrounded by the statues of the Mortis gods. It is not clear whether he desires to be like the Father or discover a gateway to the World Between Worlds. We know that there is something attracting him, offering a never-before-seen power.

While journeying through Peridea with his apprentice, Shin Hati, they ride on dark and light Howlers, in search of Rebels. Baylan tells Shin that he desires to end the repetitive cycle of conflicts between the Jedi and Sith. However, it is unclear what specific result he has in mind or how he intends to accomplish it.

While exploring Peridea, Skoll and Shin Hati stumble upon signs of a confrontation between Sabine Wren and a group of thieves. Skoll thinks that Wren is still alive, and Hati asks her owner about Ezra Bridger, calling him a Jedi trainee. Skoll, in turn, admits to missing the idea of the Jedi Order but not its eventual weaknesses. During the conversation about Peridea, Skoll mentions feeling a strong attraction towards something unique on the planet. He suspects that there may be hidden depths to it.

In the sixth episode of Ahsoka, Baylan discusses his future plans with Shin. He aims to end the ongoing pattern of light and dark forces ruling the galaxy in order to gain a more lasting type of power. He thinks that Peridea is crucial for “the beginning,” giving him the power to change history.

Baylan Skoll talks about a stronger power than Admiral Thrawn or the Great Mothers of Dathomir, a force that attracts him. The Great Mothers are said to be running away from this power, but Baylan Skoll plans to use it for his own gain.

Baylan Skoll’s objective on Peridea is to create a future that goes beyond the conventional Jedi Order, similar to a character in the game Jedi: Fallen Order.

Baylan’s Working For Morgan Elsbeth

Baylan Skoll and his apprentice, Shin Hati, have joined forces with Lady Morgan Elsbeth, as they all share a mutual objective of bringing back Thrawn to the galaxy. Nevertheless, according to a recent idea, Baylan may be hiding something, going against Morgan’s goals and pursuing a different form of dominance.

Hidden Indications of Baylan’s True Goals

Baylan displayed not just formidable combat skills, but also an astute capacity to influence and intimidate his adversary during their lengthy duel. While doing so, he unintentionally suggested two competing views on the Empire. Despite his efforts to bring Thrawn back to life, Baylan has shown his profound contempt for the Imperial figure and its leaders. He has spoken out against Darth Vader’s legacy, which he views as a legacy of devastation and death.

The conflicting emotions that Baylan has towards the Empire imply that his ultimate goal may not be limited to bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn back from exile, even though he and Shin joined forces with Night sister Morgan Elsbeth to travel to the extraterrestrial world of Peridea and retrieve him.

Speculation over the character of the power that Baylan desires and its potential impact on the storyline are prompted by this theory, which offers intriguing new insights into his true motives.

What initially drove Baylan to work for Morgan is unclear. He didn’t know what Peridea meant until Morgan showed it to him on the star map. He could have been led by the Force, or Morgan could have told him interesting things about the Night sisters and Thrawn.

But much information about Baylan Skoll’s early goals is still missing, and it is not likely that he knew from the start that he would find a mysterious power in another world.

Baylan Skoll is Powerful Compared to Strongest Jedi

By vanquishing the experienced and formidable Jedi Ahsoka Tano, Baylan Skoll proves his strength. He may have trouble competing with the galaxy’s best duelists, but his physical strength and distinctive lightsaber style make him a formidable foe.

Baylan Skoll vs. Ahsoka Tano

Baylan Skoll showed his deadly strength in his duels with Ahsoka Tano, where he displayed a distinctive lightsaber form that bears resemblance to Anakin Skywalker. It is worth mentioning that Ahsoka’s defeat can be attributed to her facing an opponent who used an unconventional lightsaber, which posed a unique challenge that she had not encountered previously.

Ahsoka Tano vs Baylan Skoll

Although Baylan’s skill in dueling is clearly evident, it is important to acknowledge that Ahsoka is also highly proficient and experienced in combat.  She has received training from none other than Anakin Skywalker, the legendary Jedi Knight.

Ahsoka has an impressive track record when it comes to facing formidable opponents such as Darth Maul, General Grievous, Darth Vader and Asajj Ventress. However, in her first encounter with Baylan, she was defeated by him. Despite this initial defeat, Ahsoka managed to hold her own in subsequent clashes against Baylan.

Telekinetic strikes usually don’t work against Force-sensitive characters who are as strong as their opponents. Because of this, when two Force-sensitive fighters fight, it doesn’t always come down to pushing and pulling. Sometimes it comes down to how well they use their lightsabers. Baylan Skoll beat Ahsoka Tano in battle; the two were about equal in power.

Baylan Skoll vs Best Duelists

Although Baylan showed strength when facing Ahsoka, it is believed that he may have difficulty when going up against top Jedi duelists like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Mace Windu in the universe.

Strongest Jedi

He is not as skilled as the masters from the prequel era when it comes to dueling. Nevertheless, his physical prowess might enable him to either match his adversaries in combat or successfully evade them.

Baylan Skoll vs. Count Dooku

We can compare Baylan’s power to that of Count Dooku, who is famous for his distinctive lightsaber hilt and aggressive fighting technique. Although Dooku is skilled in Form II, Baylan’s immense strength would likely give him the advantage, especially considering how Anakin Skywalker was able to defeat Count Dooku in “Revenge of the Sith.”

Dooku vs Skoll

Baylan is a skilled warrior, but his abilities with the Force remain a mystery. Thrawn knows about Baylan being a Jedi General during the Clone Wars, indicating that he has a well-known reputation. However, Baylan has not yet fully shown the audience the full range of his Force powers, which has left them wondering about his abilities beyond just using a lightsaber.

Ahsoka only uses one lightsaber against Baylan Skoll?

Baylan is a character who possesses exceptional skill in wielding a lightsaber, as showcased in Ahsoka Episode 4. Throughout the episode, Baylan consistently displays his mastery by delivering forceful and unwavering strikes.

Skoll and Ahsoka

During the confrontations between Ahsoka Tano and her opponent, their duels were not limited to using telekinetic strikes alone. His proficiency with the lightsaber is evident as he ultimately emerges victorious in his battle against Ahsoka.

Reasons: Why Ahsoka employ single lightsaber

Ahsoka Tano typically wields two lightsabers for both added defense and offense, a lesson learned from her master, Anakin Skywalker, during the Clone Wars. The strategic advantage is clear – with two blades, she can fight defensively with one and offensively with the other. This dual lightsaber technique is especially useful when facing formidable opponents like Asajj Ventress and General Grievous.

formidable opponents like Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku and General Grievous.

Though Anakin had instructed her to use both lightsabers, Ahsoka chooses to utilize just one during her confrontation with Baylan Skoll. It is not totally apparent that this is the intended action. She may have preferred to use both hands on one saber in order to withstand Baylan’s devastating attacks, according to one explanation. Her need to have both hands free to seize the star map at any point is another possible explanation.

Lightsaber Fight

Despite the potential reasons, using only one lightsaber against Baylan proves to be a blunder, leading to her being overpowered. This choice may have prevented her from effectively destroying the star map before Baylan’s group reached Peridea, altering the course of the series.

In Episode 7, Ahsoka corrects her approach and faces Baylan with both lightsabers. However, even with this adjustment, Baylan’s skill and experience in combat prove to be formidable, highlighting the complexity of their duel.

What makes Skoll’s lightsaber even more unique is its elongated hilt, setting a record in canon. This design allows him to employ sweeping, broadsword-like movements, emphasizing strength and control.

Skoll’s lightsaber form is reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker

When it comes to wielding a lightsaber, Baylan Skoll stands out with his distinctive style. His approach closely mirrors Form V Shien/Djem So, a formidable lightsaber technique. Although he likely underwent training in various Jedi styles, Skoll leans heavily towards powerful lightsaber strikes, reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker’s robust combat style from the Clone Wars.

In his duel against Ahsoka Tano, Skoll’s distinct fighting style becomes evident. An even more interesting possibility is that Skoll had a hidden apprenticeship under Darth Vader, or that he has ties to Anakin Skywalker. Skoll’s lightsaber duels are a mesmerizing spectacle because of his exceptional combination of strength and precision, which distinguishes him in the world.
